Vaccination of Cows Kick off in Marigat.

On Thursday, 21st November, the residents of Eldume (Ilchamus) Location began the day with vaccination of their animals. Following a reported outbreak of foot and mouth disease, the Livestock department had promised to have a vaccination exercise as from Monday 18th November 2013.
The Department of Livestock has created a schedule to guide them have all livestock vaccinated in the Marigat District.
According to a resident of Eldume village, over two thousand five hundred cows had turned up for the vaccination exercise.
He further said that the cows were being charged Ksh.35 per cow irrespective of the size and age.Farmers said that although they had woken up early, they found along queue of cows already in the crush.
They were optimistic that the quarantine will be called off soon.  They  also  long to resume the sale of livestock.
According to Dr. Julius K. Cheruiyot of Livestock Department, on completion of the exercise on 29th November 2013, he projects that around 30,000 cows will have been vaccinated. This was according to Animal Disease Control Act Cap 364) dated 5th Nov. 2013.
"There are challenges of old vehicles and unavailability of the vaccines in the market,’’ said   Dr. Cheruiyot
On the cost of the vaccine, Dr. Cheruiyot, said the it was not expensive as the sampling, testing and identification of the strain was not the seven or the four strain one.
