In a bid to promote climate smart agriculture, Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN) in collaboration with Sun culture company are planning to install Agro solar Irrigation in Marigat Sub-county.
Farmers from Eldume Location in Marigat
Sub-county have for decades ventured into agriculture as a source of livelihood
using furrow Irrigation, their main source of water being River Molo. Major
crops grown are maize, watermelon, onions, beans and rice.
The Solar power Irrigation system technology ensures water efficiency and saves up to 70% of water
loss through furrow Irrigation that is commonly used in ASAL areas.
“This technology will open more
opportunities in farming and spur the development of our county.” Said the area
chief, Samuel Sekeu.
The community has availed 1 acre
piece of land for demonstration. They plan to plant tomatoes and beans.
“The demonstration farm will give farmers a clear picture of how the system works and we anticipate spreading the idea to the rest of farmers beyond Marigat.” Said Mr. Sauroki, Eldume Farmers Co-operative Chairman.
